DENT 5006EX - Dental Clinical Practice: International Placement Vietnam

External - Summer - 2018

This course consists of a 2 week intensive overseas clinical placement, introducing final year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students to Vietnam, its culture and society. These include providing consultations and dental treatments in hospital and school dental clinic settings as well as gaining unique insight into the day to day life in Vietnam. The clinical placement experience will further develop cultural awareness and basic language skills. This course will be taken in lieu of one 4 week long rural clinical placement in Australia and contribute directly/gain credit towards the clinical assessment component of BDS 5.

    Restrictions Only Bachelor of Dental Surgery students who have successfully completed DENT 4000. A cumulative GPA minimum of 4.5 is required at the completion of DENT 3000 (ie, BDS 3).
    Assessment This intensive course includes a range of pre-placement, placement and post-placement assessment activities which include written assignments, tutor summary of clinical performance, reflective portfolio and oral presentations.

    Required Resources
    Background material relevant to the study tour (course and assessment information, a reading list, templates for the Reflective Portfolio, presentations) will be provided online. Students will also identify and source relevant information as they progress through this course. This course will require students to bring along a personal computer or hand held device. The accompanying academic staff member will also bring along School of Dentistry laptop for students to borrow as required.

    Learning & Teaching Modes
    This course involves a 2 week intensive study abroad clinical placement experience including 2 weeks of pre-departure and 2 weeks of post-placement activities.
    There will be several pre-departure preparation activities involving class meetings; group and staff discussion and independent learning activities. These learning activities will assist students to learn about the context of the forthcoming international experience. Students will review the literature to explore the dental health care system in Vietnam. Students will explore Vietnam’s cultural and social history in these sessions and develop skills in cultural awareness. Group discussions will be led by 成人大片 Dental School staff who have existing links with clinicians and private providers in-country.
    The 2 week intensive study abroad experience will consist of observational and hands on clinical practice in various settings under the supervision of qualified dental supervisors. During clinical practice activities students will self-monitor their performance and be provided with tutor feedback on their performance. 
    Time spent with host families and independent travel time will allow students to experience the day to day life in Vietnam and gain further insights into the culture and social history of Vietnam and its’ people.
    Students will reflect on their study abroad clinical learning and cultural immersion experiences via a Reflective Portfolio. On return to Adelaide students will reflect and summarise their experiences via a group debrief and an oral presentation (including a short case presentation) to their peers and staff.
    Workload

    The information below is provided as a guide to assist students in engaging appropriately with the course requirements.

    This course will run over a 6 week period = 2 wks pre-departure; 2 wks placement; 2 wks post placement.
    There are 56 hours of structured learning activities.
    There are 23 hours of non contact time.
    Assessment tasks will require approximateky 60 hours of study time.

    Lecture topics:
    Pre-departure - Course outline, requirements and expectations, assessment tasks, travel and accommodation arrangements (2hr – face to face and online reading)

    Pre-departure - Clinical procedures and record keeping. Simple preventive restorations: material and technique (2hr – face to face and online reading )
    Specific Course Requirements
    This course requires students to participate in study tour outside of Australia. Students will need to attend pre-departure meetings.
    Selection into the course will be based on a combination of academic achievement, achieving a minimum satisfactory standard in clinic and written assessments and responses to written application. Applicants may require a short interview. Places are limited.
    Small Group Discovery Experience
    The international experience will be undertaken in small groups. Where practical, students will reflect on their experience in small groups and give presentations to other participants and stakeholders, either face to face or in an online environment, as well as debriefing during the tour. In addition, the pre-departure class meetings will be conducted in groups. Students will work with a supervising dentist who has extensive experience in providing culturally competent dental care in a variety of rural and remote communities.

    The primary assessment task during the international experience is dental clinical practice. Students will also undertake a Reflective Portfolio and Oral presentation on arrival to Adelaide
