MATHS 3020 - Advanced Mathematical Perspectives III

North Terrace Campus - Semester 2 - 2024

The aim of this course is to develop research skills in the mathematical sciences. The student will undertake a research project in one of the areas of research strength of the School of Mathematical Sciences: Mechanics, Pure Mathematics and Statistics & Stochastics. Students will be required to meet weekly with a supervisor and to prepare a written final report and, in addition, give a seminar based on that report.

    Course Learning Outcomes
    This course is aimed at improving students mathematics and statistics research and problem solving skills. In particular students should gain an improved ability to:

    1. Understand how to translate a real-world problem, given in words, into a mathematical formulation.
    2. Critically analyse and interpret results.
    3. Seek relevant information, and advance new ideas based on the existing literature.
    4. Formulate a rigorous mathematical argument.
    5. Communicate mathematical or statistical ideas, concepts, and results both orally and in writing.

    Assessment Related Requirements
    An agregate score of 50% or more is required to pass this course.
    Assessment Detail
    Details of oral and written ongoing reporting will be determined by the lecturers for each project group.  Final oral (group) presentations will be held in Week 12. 

    The final project report should be a professional document between 15 and 20 pages in length. Both presentation and mathematical content will be assessed.

    All written work is to be submitted via the MyUni site for the course.

  • Student Feedback
