MATHS 1015 - Advanced Mathematical Perspectives I

North Terrace Campus - Semester 1 - 2019

The aim of this course is to develop foundational research skills in the mathematical sciences. It will be taught as three small group workshops per week and assessed through guided discovery projects. Students will be required to participate proactively in the small groups workshops and by involvement in open-ended problems, independent reading and completion of the guided discovery projects.

    Learning & Teaching Modes
    This course is run largely in a workshop format. Students will work closely with academic members of staff in a small group discovery environment. Two written projects and a presentation constitute the assessment for the course.

    Outline

    Each week will consist of a combination of formal presentations of material, practicals, tutorials and workshops, though the mix in each week may vary depending on topic.

    Week 1: Introduction, outline, tools of the trade, and introduction to the modelling project.

    Week 2: Symmetry in patterns

    Week 3: Repetition and periodicity in patterns

    Week 4: Simple deterministic, continuum models

    Week 5: Simple discrete, stochastic models

    Week 6: Putting these together

    Week 7: Other models and analysis of data

    Week 8: Model comparisons and project work

    Week 9: What is pure maths?  Reading and writing maths.  Commencing work on the pure maths project.

    Week 10: How to do proofs.  Continuing work on the project.

    Week 11: How to do proofs.  Continuing work on the project.

    Week 12: Oral Assessment: Poster sessions

    Week 13: Oral Assessment (if needed)

    This course aims to develop independent student learning in a small group discovery environment.
