MDIA 1009 - CGI and Visual Effects/Game Art I

Tea Tree Gully - Semester 2 - 2015

This course provides an introduction to the field of visual effects and 3D computer animation for television and cinema. Students are taught the practical and theoretical aspects of the movie and TV making process so they understand where computer generated imagery fits in to the workflow of a production. In addition it introduces the art skills required to design and develop 3D models and textures for a variety of genres that utilise interactive digital technology. These can include the simulation and serious games genres. This course puts particular emphasis on modelling, texturing, concept development and drawing. Students work with software such as Maya and Photoshop. It provides an entry point for Level II and III courses in both CGI and Visual Effects and Game Art.

    At the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

    2 Demonstrate knowledge of basic lighting principles and associated rendering techniques
    3 Create 2D texture maps for use with 3D models

    This is a practice-based course that provides a thorough grounding in the essential skills required to use industry-standard, computer graphic applications. Students complete tasks assigned in workshop classes under the active instruction of members of CIC staff.

    Assessment Summary
    Lecturer-led software demonstrations with students submitting files at end of lessons and individual projects demonstrating knowledge acquired during formative exercises.

    Rationale for assessment: Assessment is entirely determined by teaching staff of the Creative Industries Centre and identical in every respect to the approach and standards used in the equivalent qualifications regularly taught through the CIC. A joint management group comprising senior staff from both the University and CIC will monitor assessment processes and student outcomes.
