Course Learning Outcomes
1 Be able to discuss the surgical principles related to management of sleep disordered breathing 2 Understand the range of presurgical evaluations 3 Appreciate the selection of surgical procedures 4 Be able to discuss the evidence for and against surgical interventions 5 Evaluate the effectiveness of oral appliance therapy in surgical cases 6 Demonstrate competency in the management oral appliance therapy for referred patients 7 Present cases to peers in a manner that facilitates interdisciplinary management of patients University Graduate Attributes

Assessment

Online quiz x 5 (50%)
– at the end of each module students will complete an online quiz. The quizzes will use a variety of question formats – MCQ, SBA, extending matching questions and short answer.
Tutorial 3 (10%)
– Assessment of tutorial: design a flow chart demonstrating clinical reasoning in selecting surgical management or oral appliance therapy or CPAP
Case presentation (20%)
Written case report (20%)
Tutorial 1 (formative assessment)
– students will explore selected scientific literature on the use of surgery in the management of obstructive sleep apnoea
Tutorial 2 (formative assessment)
– students will explore complex cases of sleep disordered breathing, their medical and dental assessment and surgical management. The tutorial paper will require students to respond to several short answer questions.
Case review x 3 (formative assessment)
– Critical evaluation and discussion of three cases involving surgery (diagnosis, multidisciplinary management, monitoring and outcomes) of increasing complexity.Submission
All submissions will be electronic.
