Learning & Teaching Activities
Learning & Teaching Modes
This is course is presented in the first year of the Master of Clinical Nursing program offered through the Adelaide Nursing School. This course uses a blend of lectures, tutorials and workshops to identify situations that impact the daily environment of nursing practice. Its purpose is to address the fundamentals of nursing practice that underpin selected acute and chronic health problems and integrate evidence-based practice and nursing care of clients with acute and chronic health problems.
Workload
The information below is provided as a guide to assist students in engaging appropriately with the course requirements.
The workload for this course requires attendance at:
• 4 hours module activities / week
• 1 x 2 hour tutorial / week
• 1 x 2 hour inquiry based learning workshop / week
Non contact hours for assessment and tutorial preparation will be 6-9 hours per week.Learning Activities Summary
The tutorials and workshops will cover the following health conditions. Each tutorial and workshop will cover content on pathophysiology, pharmacology, nursing assessment and nursing care for selected health condtions.

Portfolio Assignment Guidelines
Students will be required to create a poster including information to teach a fellow student about a pathophysiological condition from a list of 10 conditions learnt in this course listed below. Create an interactive poster about a health condition and link this condition to a National Health Priority Area (NHPA). Supported by an essay providing rationales for the information included in the poster.
Health Conditions:

• Module 3: Hypertension OR Coronary Artery Disease OR Myocardial Infarction OR
• Module 6: Rheumatoid Arthritis OR Osteoarthritis OR
• Module 7: Bowel Cancer OR Lung Cancer OR Breast Cancer OR Prostate Cancer
The first component of the assignment:

• Identify key anatomy and physiology of the body system
• Describe the pathophysiology of the disease as well as the signs and symptoms
• Identify the National Health Priority Area (NHPA) related to the disease
• Outline key nursing assessments for nurses to monitor the disease and treatments
• Identify key nursing interventions to maintain a person’s health with this disease
• Identify the National Safety & Quality Healthcare Service Standards (NSQHSS) used to provide the nursing care
The second component of the assignment:
• In the essay (1500 word limit)
• Provide rationales for why the disease was chosen and how it is link to the National Health Priority Area (NHPA)
• Explain how to perform the nursing assessments discussed in the poster and why they are important assessments to monitor the patient’s condition and treatments
• Explain all the nursing intervention and nursing care given to the person
• Describe how the National Safety & Quality Healthcare Service Standards (NSQHSS) are used by nurses to provide the outlined nursing care in the poster

ASSESSMENT 2: MEDICATION PAMPHLET
Due Date: 6th September
Weighting: 20%
Length: Pamphlet (500 word limit) + Reflection (500 word limit)
The purpose of the medication pamphlet assignment is to produce a 2 page pamphlet as an education tool to teach a patient how to administer inhaled medication OR subcutaneously administered medication. Teaching the patient about medication administration is important skill for clinical practice when patients are ready to be discharged home and manage their chronic conditions independently.
Choose one of the following medications for your education pamphlet:
• Salbutamol
• Ipratropium
• Heparin
• Insulin
Requirements for the Medication Pamphlet:
• Copy and paste template headings into Cadmus and then populate with information to teach a patient about how to administer one of the above medications
Include the following information in the template pamphlet document (750 word limit):
• What the medication is used for
• How to prepare the device to deliver the medication
• Provide a step by step guide for administering the medication
• Provide instructions to care for the medication and device (e.g. storage, cleaning and disposing of sharps/waste safely)
• The education information will need to be targeted at a patient level. Therefore, any terminology used will need to be both defined and explained at a patient level.
Include the following information in the reflection (500 word limit):
• Explain the reasons why you chose to include the information, images, diagrams or pictures into the pamphlet and how these would assist the patient understanding how to safely administer the medication.

ASSESSMENT 3: MEDICATION PORTFOLIO

Length: 1000 Word limit
The purpose of this Medication Portfolio assignment is to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding about 5 medications. Choose one medication from each module listed below. It is important that all RNs have knowledge/understanding of common medications, to safely administer these to patient’s receiving care in a health care setting.
• Module 1: Oxycodone OR Ibuprofen
• Module 4: Frusemide OR Spironolactone
• Module 5: Lactulose OR Omeprazole
• Module 6: Methotrexate OR Baclofen
• Module 7: Topotecan OR Hyoscine butylbromide

Unless otherwise indicated all submission of assignments is to be through the assignments portal of Cadmus. Students MUST keep an electronic copy of all assignments submitted. Cover sheets are required for all assignments and can be accessed from the School of Nursing website.
Extension of time for submission of assignments is subject to negotiation with the course coordinator. Requests must be made before the due date of the assignment. In principle, all assignments should be submitted by the due date. However, an extension may be granted if the request is made before the due date and the usual administration procedures are followed.
Late submission without an approved extension will be penalised at the rate of 5% of available marks for each working day after the due date. Work submitted more than ten days after the due date may be returned unmarked. This action will be taken to prevent students who do get their work in on time being disadvantaged.
Whenever possible staff will turn around marked assignments within 4 weeks or earlier.Course Grading

Student Feedback
The University places a high priority on approaches to learning and teaching that enhance the student experience. SELTs are an important source of information to inform individual teaching practice, decisions about teaching duties, and course and program curriculum design. They enable the University to assess how effectively its learning environments and teaching practices facilitate student engagement and learning outcomes. Under the current SELT Policy (http://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/101/) course SELTs are mandated and must be conducted at the conclusion of each term/semester/trimester for every course offering. Feedback on issues raised through course SELT surveys is made available to enrolled students through various resources (e.g. MyUni). In addition aggregated course SELT data is available.
Group work component to assist in peer and team work development for clinical practice.Students have the opportunity to provide feedback to one another in their groups around participation in PBL sessions and for their group presentations. Teamwork in tutorials, group presentation assessment and PBL sessions will allow students to develop vital skills required to work and progress in a nursing profession.
More anatomy and pathophysiology are covered in the course. Stronger links are made between theory and clinical practice by applyling lecture and tutorial materials to case studies in PBL sessions. Applying knowledge to cases provides the students with the ability to use learnt infromation in the course to real clinical situations. Therefore better preparing students for clinical placements. Students will gain an understanding why knowledge in topics including anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology are important in understanding how specific nursing care can improve peoples health.
