Learning Resources
Required Resources
All students should factor in the cost of their own e-device (e.g. laptop ). Required learning resources and readings will be provided on-line via the Learning Management System (MyUni). There are no prescribed textbooks, but students will need to access various online resources (including Therapeutic guidelines). Students may need to access other softwares or online resources via the University library (e.g. EndNote).
Recommended Resources
Recommended textbooks and peer-reviewed articles will be communicated by teaching staff via the Learning Management System (MyUni). Students are encouraged to choose their resources that take their learning style into account. Materials such as online videos, presentations and documents will be provided via MyUni. Students will be required to submit written assignments via a Turnitin digital submission portal which can be accessed through MyUni. Some online assignments will require the use of Cadmus which can be accessed through MyUni.
Online Learning
MyUni will be used as a digital platform to: • host online lectures and other learning and teaching activities, resources including supporting documents, videos and external web-links. • communicate course and program related announcements to students. • promote student discussion and communication via Collborative Documents or Discussion Boards. • enable students to access and complete formative and summative assessments and receive e-feedback. These resources will be released at appropriate time points during the semester and available for the duration of the program. Students will also be able to access the Barr Smith Library and access electronic databases, e-books and peer-reviewed resources.

Workload
The information below is provided as a guide to assist students in engaging appropriately with the course requirements.
To enable successful completion of the course, students need to allocate an appropriate time commitment to their study. In addition to the formal contact time [eg, class meetings, online lectures/online Zoom, sim clinic, clinic, lab sessions, workshops/tutorials, CAD sessions ILA] students need to allocate non-contact time to their studies. Non-contact time is required for a range of activities which may include, but are not limited to, assessment tasks, reading, researching, note-taking, revision, writing, informal discussions with other students, ILA group discussions and consultation with staff.
While the relative proportion of contact and non-contact time may vary between courses. As a guide to achieve a satisfactory level of performance, however, a full-time student would expect to spend, on average, a total of 48 hrs/wk on their studies during learning periods. This includes contact and non-contact hours (see below).
The workload for undergraduate/postgraduate programs is 24 units per year (full-time).

Equipment required
Laboratory coat:
You are required to purchase a laboratory coat that should be worn in all learning laboratories in Dental Science and Practice I. You are required to wear this during your sim clinic and lab sessions, to conform with OH&S regulations.
Clinic Coat:
All students will be required to purchase a blue clinic coat to wear in the clinic during all clinic procedures.
Protective glasses:
You are required to wear protective glasses during your learning laboratories and in the clinic sessions, that conform to Australian OH&S regulations. The eyewear should be close fitting and not have gaps at the side of the eyes or above the brow. Students who wear prescription glasses need to purchase an overshield or consider if applicable wearing contact lenses with protective glasses. More information will be provided during O week.
Instrument Kit:
All students are required to purchase a kit of dental instruments for DSP1. These instruments will be required for exercises carried out on plastic models and will also be required for use in 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of operative technique exercises. Further information will be provided during O Week.
Plastic tooth Models:
The purchase of plastic models of teeth, gums and bases is required for use in Dental Science & Practice I. The same set of teeth will also be used in later years of the program. In previous years second hand models were available for purchase from senior students, but due to major changes to the teaching laboratories, the previously used models will no longer be suitable. You will be informed during O week of the cost of the articulated plastic tooth models and when the models will be available for purchase.
The combined cost for the instrument kit and plastic tooth models in 2023 was approximately $1500-2000.
Dental Loupes:
The purchase of dental loupes is highly recommended from BDS2 onwards. The cost is approximately $1000 upwards. -

Feedback (Formative Assessment)
Formative assessment activities are provided in each semester. These are to help students learn key concepts in DSP I, and provide opportunities to seek and obtain feedback as part of monitoring the progress of their learning, and to experience in the question formats used in DSP I. These activities are in the form of questions and other activities prior to and in classes, and on-line activities. The Practice Examination in Semester 1 will also enable students to review their progress and identify areas needing further learning.
Summative Assessment
To achieve a satisfactory grade in DSPI: students must demonstrate professional behaviour throughout the year. This includes punctual attendance and participation in ALL SCHEDULED CLASSES and in ALL INTERACTIONS with student colleagues and academic and support staff within the University. Professional behaviour is reviewed as part of the School Assessment Board proceedings.
DSP1 Assessment activities comprise written and practical components. The written component includes written tests and written assignments and other tasks during semester, and at the end of each semester. The practical component includes activities undertaken in clinic and simulation clinic.
Written assessments (tests and assignments) falls under the University's rules and regulations re cheating, plagiarism etc.
The overall grade for the year will be determined by performance in the written component and performance in the clinic and simulation clinic. The final grade is comprised of written component (80%) and practical component (20%). A satisfactory grade will only be awarded to students who achieve a satisfactory standard in all components.
To pass DSPI and the First Annual Examination (Progressive Integrated Assessment: PIA and DOPs), students must obtain:
• a satisfactory result in Hurdle 1a and Hurdle 1b ie.,(both clinic and sim clinic performance must reach satisfactory standard)
AND
• a satisfactory result in each of the Hurdle 2, Hurdle 3 and Hurdle 4 (all components)
AND
• overall and a satisfactory performance in the PIA, and DOPs in the First Annual Examination.

Attendance at all classes eg clinic, sim clinic, ILA sessions, subrosters (ie, radiography) are compulsory.
All students in the BDS program are required to notify the School of absences. Students are reminded that the BDS programme is a professional degree, requiring the highest standards of professional behavior. Notification of any absence is also good professional conduct. International students need to be compliant and attend classes as a requirement of the visa obligations and responsibilities under the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act 2000.

DENTAL SCIENCE AND PRACTICE I (DENT 1005AHO/1005BHO)
Hurdle 1: Practical component
Students must achieve a satisfactory grade in both components of the practical assessment to pass DSP 1.
The practical component consists of
- Clinical Performance
- Simulation Clinic Performance
Performance in clinic and simulated clinic is based on tutor assessments of performance in clinical and sim clinic sessions over the whole semester. Assessment addresses application of knowledge, clinical examination, diagnostic and management skills, practical/technical skills, professional behaviour and interpersonal skills (refer to Clinical Assessment Criteria and Standards Book).
You are responsible for monitoring your own learning and therefore you should be familiar with the Clinical Assessment Criteria and Standards. Clinic and sim clinic tutors provide verbal and written feedback related to the assessment criteria and standards to you during each session to assist your learning and development. You should be proactive with your tutors to seek feedback on your progress. This includes identifying and discussing areas that require improvement and seeking assistance to identify and implement realistic strategies for improvement.
During or at the end of semester 1, each student receives feedback regarding the standard of performance achieved during Semester 1. During Semester 2, students will have a face-to-face discussion with their tutor about their clinic learning plans and standard of performance. At the end of semester 2, clinic and sim clinic tutors submit a final written summative assessment of the standard of performance you have achieved in Semester 2 (refer to Clinical Assessment Criteria and Standards Book).
Final clinic and sim clinic performance in DSP 1 is based on a criterion-based grading system (Well Above Expectations; Above Expectations; Met Expectations; Not Yet Met Expectations and Not Met Expectations). These grades are subsequently converted to a score that contributes to the 10% each year’s grade.
To pass the overall practical component of DSP1 you must achieve a satisfactory grade for both your clinic and your simulation clinic performance. The final grade in the practical (clinic and sim clinic) component of DSP1 is not just the sum of individual assessments in your self-assessment booklet. These assessments provide feedback to help you with your learning. Your final assessment is based on an overall review of your clinical examination, diagnostic and management skills, practical/technical skills, professional behaviour, and interpersonal skills in the clinic and sim clinic context across the whole academic year. This includes overall professional behaviour, such as attendance and monitoring your own performance.
Students who at the end of the year have been graded as “Not Met the Standard” in the Practical (Clinic and/or Sim Clinic) Component of DSP 1 will not be offered additional assessment.
Hurdle 2: Written component (tests)
Hurdle 2 is comprised of summative tests held during semester 1 and semester 2 and at the end of each semester.
To pass Hurdle 2 you must achieve a combined standard of 55% or above for the tests.
Hurdle 2 contributes 70% of the written component for DSP 1.
Hurdle 3: Written component (assignments)
Hurdle 3 is comprised of summative assignments from Semester 1 and Semester 2.
To pass Hurdle 2 you must achieve a combined standard of 55% or above for all of the assignments.
Hurdle 4: Other DSP 1 Assessment Tasks
Hurdle 4 includes performance in other assessment tasks including

-Radiography practical session attendance and participation
-Culture and Health Group Assignment and Presentation
To pass DSP I (DENT 1005BHO) and the First Annual Examination (DENT 1000HO) students must obtain:
- a satisfactory result in each of the Four (4) assessment Hurdles
- obtain an overall 55% standard for DSP 1 (DENT 1005BHO) by the end of the regular academic year
- a satisfactory performance in the cumulative PIA and DOPs as part of the First Annual Examination
The overall grade for the year in DSP 1 will be determined by performance in the written summative assessments (80%) and by performance in the sim clinic and clinic (20%).
A pass grade in DSP 1 will only be awarded to students who achieve a satisfactory standard in all DSP 1 summative assessment hurdles and the First Annual Examination.
Submission
Unless otherwise indicated, coursework should be submitted electronically via MyUni. Any students experiencing technical
difficulties should contact the course coordinators at the earliest opportunity. The deadline time will be strictly enforced according to the digital time displayed by the MyUni portal. Coursework submitted to any location other than those specified will not be accepted. This includes submissions to staff email addresses. Submission dates may be extended only under exceptional circumstances as per the Modified Arrangements for Coursework Assessment (MACA) policy.Course Grading

Student Feedback
