DEVT 2100 - Poverty and Social Development

North Terrace Campus - Semester 1 - 2022

Among the biggest challenges facing the global community today are the eradication of poverty and inequality, and the needs of social development. This course introduces students to the history of the concept of poverty, the culture of poverty, the causes of poverty and its effects. Intersections between poverty and health, human rights and education will be explored in a variety of international contexts. Policies designed to reduce poverty will be analysed at both the global or international level and from community perspectives. Case studies of poverty assessments and poverty reduction projects will be a major feature of course content. The course also introduces social development, with emphasis on understanding and planning for socially sensitive development. Global attention to social development, such as the World Bank's plan and the World Summit on social development will be explored.

  • Assessment

    The University's policy on Assessment for Coursework Programs is based on the following four principles:

    Assessment Summary
    Seminar Presentation - 20% of final mark
    All students will be required to participate in a short group presentation during the semester. This exercise is designed to give you a chance to work cooperatively in small groups to critically analyse an issue in conflict and crisis and lead a discussion with the rest of the seminar. Assessment will be based on how well the overall discussion is designed, presented and conducted by all group members. A final mark applied to the group as a whole will be based on the following criteria: (i) content of argument demonstrates understanding of relevant concepts presented in readings and lectures (ii) coherency and quality of presentation of material (iii) use of appropriate media examples (iv) stimulating participation through activities or questions. Presentations should ideally last no longer than 20 minutes. Students not presenting should be prepared to ask questions based on the group presentations.

    Write a short review of the film Africa Rising, which looks at development in the context of Ethiopia.
