Asia & the World consists of two lectures and one tutorial per week. Times and locations of rooms varies from semester to semester and year-to-year. Please check course planner for final details.
TImetable clashes of lectures and tutorials may be able to be negotiated. Contact the course coordinator.
Lectures and audiovisuals, such as documentaries, cover the overall themes, theories and particular examples relevant to showing in which ways and how Asian influences have helped shaped the West. Regular attendance is advised, especially if quizzes form part of course assessment.
Tutorials use the set readings for each week as the basis of exercises leading up to and preparing you for the assignments. They stress learning how to understand and practice argumentative and critical writing using A&W related materials.
Tutorial attendance is compulsory and reasons must be given for non-attendance. Without regular attendance students will struggle to understand A&W's specific requirements.
Failure to attend tutorials may result in non marking of assessment items, refusal to allow resubmission or extensions to submission deadlines or refusal to assess assignments.

On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
1 Understand the significant contribution of Asian societies to western culture 2 Critically analyse the role of material culture in shaping many value judgments, especially where these involve notions of superiority and inferiority 3 Investigate and apply the complex notions of diffusion, competition, adaption and assimilation etc, and the apply this knowledge to specific cases studies of global change, especially as this apply to Asian influences 4 Recognise the complexity of the writing process where it involves correctly understanding questions, setting relevant contexts, writing explicit and developed arguments, explaining how such arguments can/should be supported by invoking sources, definitions and authorities in the field, and developing conclusions 5 Relate practical and real life examples to the theoretical concepts and explanations covered in the course 6 Understand the nature, role and formalities of key academic conventions such as referencing 7 Recognise, discriminate and assess the differences between well and poorly constructed arguments and good and poor writing University Graduate Attributes

Argument Design Paper 1 (Introduction): Approximately 500-600 words - 20% weighting
Reflective Feedback on Argument Design Paper 1: Minimum 300 words on students' response to the comment - 5% weighting
Presentation of Argument Design Paper 2: On the set tutorial question for the week chosen - 30% weighting.
Major Essay: essay on any chosen topic which was not used as argument design paper 1 or 2 - 45% weighting.Submission

Student Feedback
